The School of Visual Arts New York City (SVA NYC) is a private for-profit art school in New York City. It was founded in 1947 and is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design.

This school was started by Silas H. Rhodes and Burne Hogarth in 1947 as the Cartoonists and Illustrators School; it had three teachers and 35 students,[6] most of whom were World War II veterans who had a large part of their tuition underwritten by the U.S. government's G.I. Bill. It was renamed the School of Visual Arts in 1956 and offered its first degrees in 1972. In 1983, it introduced a Master of Fine Arts in painting, drawing and sculpture.

    Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of work that demonstrates a point of view about interaction design. Interaction design portfolios are likely visual but need not be, as we look for a broad range of references as parallel influences to the field. Portfolios must include at least five projects. You might consider: 1. Design work that demonstrates visual literacy, craft, process and the corresponding product/service 2. Usability and social science research that emphasizes the concept, and findings 3.Strategy and writing projects that communicate audience, challenge, and outcomes 4.Coding projects that show samples, processes, and outcome 5.Project management accomplishments that make clear the responsibilities, challenges, and problems solved

    Personal written statement: We want to know how critical and creating thinking shapes your design work and other pursuits. Please answer the following questions in 500-700 words: 1. Tell us about someone you look up to and why. The person can be a designer, a friend, a relative, someone in your neighborhood — anyone who inspires you and your creative practice. 2. Imagine it is 20 years from the present moment. Describe your life — what kind of work are you engaging in, what are your home and community like, in what ways have you shaped the field of interaction design and how has the field of interaction design shaped your life? 3. MFA Interaction Design offers modest, merit-based scholarships. Please indicate in your essay if you would like to be considered for a merit-based departmental award. Please submit this as a PDF document.
