The University of New South Wales (UNSW), also known as UNSW Sydney, is a public research university based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is one of the founding members of Group of Eight, a coalition of Australian research-intensive universities. Established in 1949, UNSW is a research university, ranked 44th in the world in the 2021 QS World University Rankings and 67th in the world in the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is one of the members of Universitas 21, a global network of research universities. It has international exchange and research partnerships with over 200 universities around the world.

The university comprises seven faculties, through which it offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The main campus is in the Sydney suburb of Kensington, 7 kilometers (4.3 mi) from the Sydney central business district (CBD). The creative arts faculty, UNSW Art & Design, is located in Paddington, and sub-campuses are located in the Sydney CBD as well as several other suburbs, including Randwick and Coogee. Research stations are located throughout the state of New South Wales. The university's second-largest campus, known as UNSW Canberra at ADFA (formerly known as UNSW at ADFA), abbreviated to UNSW Canberra, is situated in Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). ADFA is the military academy of the Australian Defence Force, and UNSW Canberra is the only national academic institution with a defense focus.

    Copy of Previous Thesis: Applicants who have undertaken a research component in their previous degree/s should provide the entire copy of their previous thesis. If the thesis was not written in English, provide an English abstract along with the original copy. If this is a very large file, please upload a document that lists the website where the thesis can be accessed directly. If you are still undertaking your thesis, a copy can be provided once your degree is complete.

  • Research Summary

    Complete the Research Plan Form. This will include: 1) Outline how you are eligible for admission to the program; โ€ข Your answer needs to provide details of any prior degrees completed and the research experiences that you have had. For applicants with either a Bachelorโ€™s Degree with Honours or a Masters by Research (more than 50% of the degree is research), this is normally all that is required. For other degrees, you must provide evidence of research experience and recent research outputs to establish equivalence to these qualifications. For example, for a coursework Masters, you might state that there was a thesis which was completed over one year/two terms and which had a journal publication from it, and the degree had two or more advanced technical courses. 2) Description of your capability to carry out high quality research; โ€ข In this answer you need to provide evidence of your capability to carry out research at the level of the degree you are applying for. This may include research outputs, awards and other things that recognise your abilities, but can also include research experiences that you have had in your career. For example, publications, patents and awards. 3) Rationale for why you chose this project and supervisory team โ€ข In this answer you should explain why you decided to work in this area of research and why you have selected the supervisory team to do this work 4) Description of your proposed research project (no more than 3000 words) โ€ข Include a statement of the research problem and its significance โ€ข Outline how you plan to address this problem โ€ข Requirements of a research description differ between Faculties and their research degree types. If you have any further questions regarding your research description, we recommend discussing this with your prospective supervisor.
