Applicants complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association, or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.

You will need to upload a copy of an official transcript from all universities and community colleges attended.

Applicants will need to make sure that their recommenders submit their letters through the online application system, which will send them specific instructions on how to upload it. Instructions for how to include recommenders can be found when completing the online application. Letters must come from a professor, supervisor, or manager who can attest to an applicant’s experience and skills. Applicants cannot be their own recommender.

How have your background and life experiences, including cultural, geographical, financial, educational, or other opportunities or challenges, motivated your decision to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Michigan? For example, if you grew up in a community where educational, cultural, or other opportunities were either especially plentiful or especially lacking, or are undocumented or DACAmented, you might discuss the impact this had on your development and interests. This should be a discussion of the journey that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree. If you will be a graduate student with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA), it is important to mention DACA in your personal statement since this is a consideration for some financial aid.

The academic statement of purpose should be a concise, well-written statement about your academic and research background, your career goals, and how this graduate program will help you meet your career and educational objectives. The academic statement of purpose should be different from your personal statement.
