The University of Houston (U of H) is a public research university in Houston, Texas. Founded in 1927, U of H is the flagship institution of the University of Houston System and the third-largest university in Texas with over 46,000 students. Its campus spans 667 acres (2.70 km2) in southeast Houston, and was known as University of Houston–University Park from 1983 to 1991. The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".

It has more than 400 student organizations and 17 intercollegiate sports teams. Annual U of H events and traditions include The Cat's Back, Homecoming, and Frontier Fiesta. The university's varsity athletic teams, known as the Houston Cougars, are members of the American Athletic Conference and compete in the NCAA Division I in all sports. The football team regularly makes bowl game appearances, and the men's basketball team has made 22 appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament—including six Final Four appearances. The men's golf team has won 16 national championships—the most in NCAA history.

    Applicants should submit examples of work demonstrating an ability to pursue study at an advanced level. The portfolio should be of high quality and provide evidence of well-developed graphic skills, a sense of design, and an understanding of space, form, and volume at different scales. The review committee assumes the portfolio represents the applicant’s best abilities in design. The portfolio allows reviewers to determine an applicant’s potential for success in a studio based design curriculum. Evidence of creative work is not limited to Architecture, Interior Architecture, or Industrial Design work. Examples of creative work may include designs, drawings, photographs, paintings, sculpture, writing, or other creative pursuits. Please include a brief explanation of work submitted. Portfolios must be uploaded as a part of the online application. Files should be uploaded as one PDF (not to exceed 50 MB). Organization The organization of the portfolio is a design exercise. It should be clear, concise, and thoughtfully composed to best reflect the applicant’s interests and skills. The quality of the work is of greater importance than the quantity.
