The University of Birmingham (informally Birmingham University) is a public research university located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, United Kingdom. It received its royal charter in 1900 as a successor to Queen's College, Birmingham (founded in 1825 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery), and Mason Science College (established in 1875 by Sir Josiah Mason), making it the first English civic or 'red brick' university to receive its own royal charter. It is a founding member of both the Russell Group of British research universities and the international network of research universities, Universitas 21.

Document Required:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • Degree Certificate

    Common Document

A three-year Bachelor's degree (first class) from recognised institutions.

  • Degree Transcript

    Common Document

Original or certified copies of your relevant academic transcript

  • Financials (proof of income)

    Common Document

Here you will be asked what you expect to be the primary source of funding you will have to support your studies. This might be your own personal funds (savings, loans, etc.), from other 'sponsors' such as employers, or third party funding bodies.

  • Letter of Recommendation (LOR)

    University Specific

On your application, you will be asked to supply contact details of two academic referees (or one academic reference if applicable to the course/programme applied for). Employment references may be acceptable for certain courses which require them. Please note that the contact email address of the referee must be an official email address and not a personal one (for example, gmail). Please make sure you tell your referee(s) to expect an email from the University of Birmingham, requesting them to write a reference. We recommend that the referee sends back the reference in a PDF format as it is preferred that: The reference is on official headed paper with the organisation or institutionโ€™s logo and address It includes the date, your details and the details of the referee A summary of how they know you and confirm your suitability for studying on the course you have applied for It should be signed by the referee with their official contact details. If your referee(s) send back references which are not on official headed paper, you may be asked to send in additional references. If you already have a written reference(s) and want to upload it on behalf of your referee(s), make sure the reference is a scanned copy of the original and that it is on official headed paper. Your referees will have received a reference request email from us as soon as you submitted the application (unless you uploaded the references yourself). When a referee provides the reference by clicking on the link in the reference request email, it will be automatically uploaded to your application. A referee can also provide a reference by emailing it to us directly via pgadmissions@contacts.bham.ac.uk, it should be sent from their official email address and contain their full name and role. Once the email has been received, it will be sent for processing so that it can be uploaded to your application.
