The Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) was the first newly founded university in the Federal Republic of Germany , established in 1962. The university was built as a campus university in Querenburg , outside the city center : with the exception of a few satellite campuses, all 21 faculties are located on the university grounds. The university, the residential area of Hustadt , and the Uni-Center shopping mall, which serves both, have dominated the district ever since. Teaching began in 1965, three years after the RUB's founding, with a formal opening ceremony attended by Minister-President Franz Meyers .

Since its inception, the university has been a reform university . It played a pioneering role in Germany in introducing tiered degree programs as stipulated by the Bologna Declaration . Due to its size, Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is one of the German universities with the greatest diversity of study programs. Medical students do not complete their practical training centrally in a dedicated university hospital, but are distributed among various hospitals in Bochum and the surrounding area. Until 2012, this decentralized training model, unique in Germany, was also known as the Bochum Model . Since 2012, however, the participating hospitals have presented a unified image as the University Hospital of Ruhr University Bochum (UK RUB) .
