The Ohio State University, commonly Ohio State or OSU, is a public land-grant research university in Columbus, Ohio. The flagship of the University System of Ohio, it has been ranked by major institutional rankings among the best public universities in the United States. Founded in 1870 as the state's land-grant university and the ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, Ohio State was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College and focused on various agricultural and mechanical disciplines but it developed into a comprehensive university under the direction of then-Governor and later U.S. president Rutherford B. Hayes, and in 1878 the Ohio General Assembly passed a law changing the name to "the Ohio State University" and broadening the scope of the university. Admission standards tightened and became greatly more selective throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale in the last degree earned that is relevant to the program of study

  • Degree Transcript

    Common Document

Applicants must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities that you have previously attended at both either the undergraduate or graduate levels. Your statement should not exceed three pages and use a standard format of single-spaced, 12-point font, with one-inch margins.

  • Letter of Recommendation (LOR)

    University Specific

It is suggested that at least two of the three letters of recommendation come from academic sources. Supervisors are also a good source for recommendations. We suggest providing your recommenders with information in advance on the degree and specialty to which you are applying and with a copy of your purpose and goals statement.

  • Resume

    Common Document

Your resume or curriculum vitae (CV) should be in a similar format to what you would use for a job application. You should include your previous education, professional experiences, community service, volunteer activities, publications, research and leadership experiences on your resume or CV.

  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)

The purpose and goals statement is an opportunity to introduce yourself, to express your interest in advanced nursing practice and to demonstrate your writing skills. Here are some recommended questions to consider and to address when composing your statement: What specifically are your academic and career goals? How did you decide to seek graduate education in this specialty area? How have your life experiences prepared you for a master’s degree and/or to be an advanced practice nurse in your selected specialty? How do you see yourself as a leader and advocate for patients in your future practice setting?
