MS in Mechanical Engineering

Official scanned copies of transcripts from all post-secondary institutions are required. We will not review an application for admission consideration without scans or physical copies of official transcripts on record. If you are an international applicant, you must upload scans of official transcripts with degree statements (proof of degree) in their original language, along with English language translations that follow the format of the original documents.

You’ll need three letters submitted directly by your recommenders. Academic references (professors, advisors, research supervisors) are strongly preferred. Industry references (managers, supervisors, mentors) are acceptable, especially for project‑based applicants. Letters from TAs are not accepted. Choose recommenders who know you well and can provide detailed, thoughtful insight into your qualifications and potential.

Limit to two pages in Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri (size 10 or 12). Tailor it to your intended program: Education: Schools, degrees, GPA (with scale), class rank if available, thesis topic/advisor if applicable. Research or Relevant Projects: Publications, presentations, assistantships, senior design, capstone, or team projects. Industry Experience: Internships, co‑ops, or engineering work. Technical Skills: CAD/CAE software, programming, lab techniques, instrumentation, etc. Career Interests (optional): Target industry or career path. Honors and Awards: Scholarships, recognitions. Leadership & Service: Student organizations, outreach, or other involvement.

Length & Format: No more than two double‑spaced pages, Times New Roman/Arial/Calibri (size 10 or 12), with a header labeled Statement of Purpose. What to cover: Your academic, professional, or personal experiences that prepared you for graduate study in mechanical, aerospace, or nuclear engineering. Why you want a graduate degree and how it supports your career goals. Why Ohio State MAE is the right place for you (specific faculty, research groups, facilities, or programs).

TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo

Submit a writing sample no longer than two double‑spaced pages in Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri (size 10 or 12). Add a header labeled Writing Sample. Prompt 1 (max 600 words): Describe a personal barrier, hardship, or adversity you have faced. What skills did you use or develop to overcome it, and how will those skills help you succeed in graduate school?
