Document Required:

  • Credential Evaluation

    Common Document

Any foreign language transcripts must be translated by a neutral third party (your institution, a credential evaluation service, independent translator, etc). We recommend a certified translation from ATA, ECE or WES.

  • Degree Transcript

    Common Document

Submit one scanned copy of your transcript or academic record from each school you have attended. We do not require official hard or digital copies of your transcripts for the application process, and we strongly encourage applicants to not submit official versions of their transcripts with their application.

  • Essay

    University Specific

All applicants must submit an Academic Statement that answers the following questions (1,000 words max): What are your academic interests, and why do you wish to pursue graduate studies in this specific program? How has your academic and professional background prepared you for graduate study? (Please include any research, training, or educational experiences that align with the program you are applying to.) How will our program help you achieve your intellectual and professional goals? (For research-focused programs) Please make sure to address any scholarly questions you wish to explore in the program and name any specific faculty members in this program whose research interests align with your own.

  • Letter of Recommendation (LOR)

    University Specific

A minimum of two letters is required, but three is highly recommended. Please list the names and contact information of persons you are asking to complete letters of recommendation. You must include valid email addresses.

  • Resume

    Common Document

We will value all your achievements (e.g. awards received in competitions) and experiences (e.g. research projects, leadership). However, the best place to put them in a coherent manner is your resume. Ideally, some of these items should also be properly linked with the statement of purpose document.

  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)

    University Specific

You will be asked to select your two or three top choices among the six research interest groups, based on your specific research interests. You may give more detail in your Statement of Purpose. For example, a student who would like to pursue research in "wireless networks" might select the Systems and Networking group.

  • Essay

    University Specific

Applicants are welcome to submit an Additional Information statement of 250 words or fewer to highlight information not yet discussed in other areas of the application. This statement can also be used to address any concerns you may have with your application. If, for example, you do not believe that your academic credentials demonstrate your true capabilities, please explain why. Also, describe any gaps in your academic career and work experience or any extenuating circumstances in your profile of which the admissions committee should be made aware.

  • Personal Statement

    University Specific

Applicants to master’s programs (excluding MFA programs) are encouraged to do so, though this statement is not required for the submission of the application. Write a statement that addresses the following prompt (500 words max): The Graduate School values diverse backgrounds, approaches, and perspectives, understanding them as essential ingredients for true academic excellence. As a Northwestern graduate student, how could you contribute to an intellectual community that prioritizes equity, inclusion, belonging, and cultural humility? Your answer may draw upon past or present experiences, whether in academic work, extracurricular or community activities, or everyday life.
