Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a private land-grant research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Established in 1861, MIT has since played a key role in the development of modern technology and science, ranking it among the most prestigious academic institutions in the world.

Founded in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States, MIT adopted a European polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory instruction in applied science and engineering. The institute has an urban campus that extends more than a mile (1.6 km) alongside the Charles River and encompasses a number of major off-campus facilities such as the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Bates Center, and the Haystack Observatory, as well as affiliated laboratories such as the Broad and Whitehead Institutes.

Document Required:

  • Essay

    University Specific

For the 2026โ€“2027 application, weโ€™re asking these short answer essay questions: 1) What field of study appeals to you the most right now? (Note: Applicants select from a drop-down list.) Reflect on what has led you to this interest. 2) While some reach their goals following well-trodden paths, others blaze their own trails achieving the unexpected. In what ways have you done something different than what was expected in your educational journey? 3) Reflect on how your personal and academic experiences have influenced the types of problems you would want to tackle with an MIT education, and who you would like to work on those problems with. 4) How did you manage a situation or challenge that you didnโ€™t expect? What did you learn from it? Depending on the question, weโ€™re looking for responses of approximately 100โ€“200 words each. There is also one final, open-ended, additional-information text box where you can tell us anything else you think we really ought to know.

  • High School Transcript

    Common Document

We require an official transcript sent by a school counselor or representative. This applies for high school and college transcripts. If your school does not have a school counselor, your transcript may be submitted by your registrarโ€™s office, principal/headmaster, or other official entity.

  • Short Questions

    University Specific

In addition to our main essays, we have short response questions that are designed to get to know you better. There is only space for 40-50 words each. 1) What do you do just for fun? 2) Who is someone you admire, whether you know them personally or look up to them from afar? Tell us why. 3) Whatโ€™s a topic, academic or non-academic, that you could talk about for hours? 4) MIT values both โ€œgeneralistsโ€ with varied interests and โ€œspecialistsโ€ who focus deeply on one or a few passions. Which do you think best describes you, and why?
