BFA in Graphic Design

You can choose one of two short-answer questions. Though their themes are similar, we hope you’ll find the one that speaks to you. We preface both with: "Chapman seeks to enroll a class of students that foster a diverse, dynamic and welcoming campus community. To support this goal, we encourage you to discuss any aspect of your identity, which could include perspectives, experiences, and background, and how they have shaped who you are. With this in mind, please answer one of the following questions (200 words or fewer)." Tip! We encourage you to include insight into who you are and where you come from through your lived experiences. This may include race, unique perspectives, background and how those aspects of identity have shaped you. We are committed to creating a welcoming university where all of our students can fully participate, reach their potential, and benefit from living, learning, and socializing with people different from themselves. Option 1: "Our committee would like to hear about a personal experience or lesson that has helped you better understand who you are now and/or appreciate a perspective different from your own. How would you utilize this understanding to contribute to the values and welcoming fabric of our campus community?" We want to hear your personal story! There’s no “right” answer here, only ways to share more about yourself. Option 2: "Part of the Chapman experience is to help students expand their perspectives. How will you grow personally and/or learn more about others throughout your time at Chapman?" Again, there’s no “right” answer! We want you to try to think about your potential future here at Chapman. Who do you hope to become and how can Chapman aid in the process?

Ask your counselor (or school official) to submit your official high school transcripts. If you have attended multiple high schools, you will need to submit individual transcripts for each institution attended.

Letter of Recommendation: Submit a letter of recommendation from an art / design teacher or art mentor that speaks to your creative talents and merits as a student. This letter would be in addition to the letter of recommendation required by the Office of Admission in your Common Application, so you would be submitting two letters total.

Influential Artist: Describe the most influential designer or artist to you. What is impactful about their body of work and how has this person’s work impacted your decision to be a designer?

Statement of Two Most Successful Works: Art is visual communication. Pick the two most-successful works in your portfolio and explain what makes them the most significant, including how the formal elements of the works support their meaning. (500 words or fewer)

Media Uploads: Upload 8-10 pieces from your portfolio that you feel best demonstrates your artistic talents. It may include design, drawing, photography, painting, ceramics, sculpture or video.

Statement of Interest: Provide insight to your creative background and experiences. What about Chapman’s Graphic Design program appeals to you? (500 words or fewer)
